Good News for Little Hearts

After eighteen years of parenting I’ve learned something.  Well, a lot of things actually!  But something relevant to today’s discussion.  Kids feel everything adults do.

We often dismiss kids feelings as unimportant or as about things that don’t really matter but when you really get to know children, you realize that just because their world is smaller than ours it doesn’t mean it’s not difficult to navigate.

I recently received three books to review from New Growth Press, a company known for publishing a lot of Biblical Counselling materials, but these three books were counselling materials for children.  They’re part of a bigger series called Good News for Little Hearts and I am in love with these books.

They are full of adorable illustrations, using different animals for each one, and they deal with real heart issues in the ways that affect children.  Each book ends with a discussion guide for parents too, equipping you to continue the discussion further with your child.

In Halle Takes a Stand, Halle the Hedgehog learns about fitting in after standing up for Freya the Frog who is getting teased about being slimy at school.  My favourite part of this book might be the teacher, Mr. Owl, who is drawn to look just like the editor, Paul David Tripp.

Caspian Crashes the Party, edited by one of my favourite professors, Edward T Welch, is all about being jealous.  Caspian ruins his brother’s party because he thought it was better than his was.  In the end, Caspian learns to deal with his jealousy and love his brother well, and there is lots of opportunity for discussion with children build right in.

The late David Powlison and his wife Nan edited the last one I received, Buster Tries to Bail.  David Powlison was an amazing teacher and I’m so glad I was able to take one of his courses.  It is so lovely that we have another offering from him releasing now.  Buster is under great stress because of an upcoming race and learns how to deal with it.  This would be such a great discussion starter right now in our world with our children being constantly thrown into new situations with distance learning and the like.

Check out these books and others in the series - they would make great Christmas gifts!
